Well, I am a btech student just like you. In my first year, I was looking to learn something new after my first semester. The choices I had : 1. Web development 2. Android App development 3. iOS App development 4. New programming language like Python/ Ruby on rails( didn't know much about Ruby but had heard that it's new and a highly paid profession in the IT industry) So I decided to take one step at a time. While googling about web development, I realized that the first step towards web development is Web Design. As it turns out web design is a profession on its own. Designers design a website in Photoshop and sell it to small and big companies who either need a new site or want a modified version of their current website. Later, the companies hire a coder who codes the website as per the design. There is generally a 60-40 payment among the coder and the designer. Just to give you an idea, if a company decides to make a website with a budget of $4000 in mind, the designer will be paid $1600 and the coder $2400. So I decided why not give it a try. I decided to learn Photoshop. I took this course from udemy ". Learn Photoshop, Web Design & Profitable Freelancing ".An excellent course. I jumped directly into freelancing in 99designs after finishing the course. 99designs is a croud sourcing website where a client( a company) holds a contest with details of how they want their website and you, being a designer can submit your designs and if the client is satisfied with your designer he/she chooses you as the winner and you get paid. Within a month I made around 7-8 designs for different contests in 99designs. Honestly, my first 2-3 designs were pathetic compared to the professional designs that were being proposed. But I didn't lose hope. After some more failures, I designed a website and the client was pleased with my design. He chose me as the winner and I won $1295. I learnt a lot about web design. How a modern website should look like, what is flat design, how to use colors and fonts effectivly and the list goes on . Now that I had a rough idea about web design, I started to learn web development after my second semester. The coding part. There are many courses in udemy about web development. Also I took another course about Android app development from udemy. Currently I am half way through both app development and web development courses. I'll let you know what I do after I finish the courses. Hope the review was useful. I also suggest you to learn C/C++ before you go for app development in Android or iOS . It's a benefit as C/C++ is comparatively easier compared to Java ( for Android) and xcode and swift ( for iOS).
