If the cut grass forms a continuous airtight layer, the lawn beneath it will suffocate and rot. It is better to dig up the grass after mowing, at least for the most part (or use a harvested mower) and aerate the lawn, then fertilize it with ´classic´ NPK. And compost the cut grass.
