Damaged trees in the forest?

Today I went for a walk in the woods and we have hundreds of small trees there. But there is a silver paint on all of them. Is that on purpose or was it a vandal?

Answer :

This is intentional - protection against taste. The trees don't mind, but they discourage roe deer (etc.) from biting the bast and young shoots.
