How to Make a Diaper Cake
What is a diaper cake? A diaper cake isn’t a literal cake that you can eat. It’s actually diapers grouped together to form a cake-like configuration that’s also visually pleasing. Not only is a diaper cake deliciously tongue-in-cheek, the new mom will definitely find it useful as well. Here’s how to make one for your friend.
Materials
Around 100 pieces of diapers. Size depends on how big the baby is.
Rubber bands, varying sizes
Baby gifts such as toys, baby cologne, baby cream, baby clothes
Plastic cake board
Hard cardboard (optional)
Scissors
Colorful ribbons
Procedure
Think of diaper cakes in terms of wedding cakes. The topmost layer of the cake is the smallest one, so start with that.
Take a diaper and roll it starting from the open top side of the diaper. Use a rubber band to secure the rolled-up diaper to keep it from rolling out.
Roll up seven more diapers and arrange them in a circular formation around the first rolled-up diaper. You can use an individual rubber band on each of them, but you can simply hold them in place with one big rubber band holding them all in place. Congratulations, you now have the topmost layer of your diaper cake.
Proceed to the middle layer by repeating Steps 1-3. To make it bigger, add 15 more rolled-up diapers in a circular formation around the 7 diapers. You now have the middle layer of your diaper cake.
For the base layer, repeat Steps 1-3, wrap 7 diapers around the central diaper, another 15 rolled-up diapers and finally, 30 diapers around them in a circular formation.
Here is a nifty trick that will give your friend a nice surprise. In each layer, take out the diaper in the center and replace it with other gifts. It may be a baby bottle, a rolled-up baby t-shirt, baby cream or any kind of other baby gifts that can fit in the middle. It’s recommended to use a baby bottle or a stuffed toy for the topmost layer, to make the diaper cake even taller.
You can make a diaper cake board out of any sturdy, hard cardboard, or you can simply buy a proper plastic cake board from your nearest dollar store. Make sure that your cake board is decorated or colorful to make your diaper cake look more like a real cake.
To stack the diaper cake layers together, use a dowel in the appropriate size. Insert the dowel carefully so that it goes through each layer, between the diapers and not through the diapers.
Tie a decorative ribbon around each layer to cover up the rubber bands.
You can add more gifts in the middle layer, such as toys and baby cologne. You can secure them using the ribbon.
Wrap the whole cake in cellophane and netting, tied together with a bow for the finishing effect.
