All of your friends are athletes. They earned quite a reputation kicking soccer balls through defenders en route to the formerly elusive “Goal!” You, on the other hand, want to establish your name in a sport that your friends have not tried. Footbag is your best option. Now, the only thing missing is the sport’s official item, the hackey sack. Better make one as soon as possible so that you can quickly stamp your legacy in the obscure sport’s annals and become the only footbag great in your town.
Footbag is a pretty simple sport that you can play almost anywhere and anytime. As long as you have a hackey sack with you, you can play footbag in your lawn, in a park or even during your coffee breaks at work. You can enjoy all the footbag action that you want if you decide to make your own hackey sack. Made with fabric and sand, you can stitch your way into having a hackey sack that is fit for all your footbag-playing needs.
Regulation Hackey Sacks
Before you create a hackey sack, you should be aware of the prescribed dimensions of regulation hackey sacks. Hackey sacks are ideally four to five centimeters in diameter and about 50 grams in weight. Know these dimensions by heart so that you can make a hackey sack that resembles the ones used by the pros. Remember, if you want to be a pro, you better use an item that pros are accustomed to.
Materials Used:
light-medium - medium density cotton fabric – 4.5 cm
sand
sewing needle
sewing thread
scissors
tape measure
marker
Hackey Sack Materials
Materials for hackey sacks are very easy to collect. You can get all the equipment and materials that you need from a textile and needlework store. When you select a cotton fabric for your hackey sack, get something that is soft, durable and stylish. Choose a pattern that is striking enough to wow any onlooker. Once you have selected a fabric, you can head to a needlework store to buy the rest of materials. Pick-up some sand from your neighborhood when you have secured all the other hackey sack materials.
Cotton + Sand = Hackey Sack
First, get your fabric and roll it up to form a ball. Stitch the ends of the fabric but leave a small opening for now, so that the filling will have an entry point. Make sure that your stitches are straight and the fabric’s ends are properly joined, otherwise, the sack’s filling will escape. Once done, pour some sand through the opening, until the hackey sack reaches the regulation weight. Close the opening with your sewing equipment to finish your hackey sack.
Hackey Sack Trial
Before you consider your creation as an official hackey sack, you should run a few quality control tests just to make sure that your sack is durable enough to withstand constant use. Press hard on your sack’s exterior and see if the filling can escape. When you’re done, kick at the hackey sack with several footbag tricks. If the hackey sack fails your test, you have to locate the problem area. Disengage the loose spot then stitch it back in place.
Your hackey sack is now ready and hopefully, your game is as well. When you are good enough to rival any of the pros, you can market yourself and the sport by saying, “Hackey is the new hockey.”
