How to Survive on a Deserted Island
You may think that it only happens in the movies but think again — you may one day find yourself stuck on a deserted island. There have been various accounts of people who have survived on an island alone before eventually getting rescued so if you are suddenly faced with a similar problem, don’t lose hope. Here are some tips on how to survive on a deserted island:
Build a safe and suitable shelter.
Many islands have rocks, trees, thick grasses and other natural entities that may give enough protection from the harsh elements that surround you. Protection especially against the sun is important so finding and making a shelter should be prioritized. Look for low trees and stay under them and stay out of the water since the sun bounces off it and will eventually burn you faster.
Use the mode of transportation that got you stuck on the island. A raft, boat and plane or parts of it may help you build the shelter that you need.
Look for food and water.
Don’t just eat anything you see on the island. Though there are many edible roots and berries, investigate on each of them first before taking a bite. Stick to those that you are familiar with. You can also wait for an animal to eat it first to see if it is indeed edible. Bugs are abundant and most are safe to eat so you may want to try them out too.
Though you may have unlimited access to ocean water, keep in mind that it is not safe to drink. It maybe good for washing and cleaning clothes but drinking it may dehydrate your body even further because of its salt composition and other chemical elements.
To get fresh and safe water to drink, look for possible containers such as your shoes, leaves or shells. These will help you collect rainwater. You should also start a fire since it has many uses. It can be used to cook, provide light, boil and distill water, among others.
Think positive.
The willpower to survive will allow you to last for many days, weeks, months and even years on a deserted island. Calm down so that you can think thoroughly and plan carefully. If you are with some other people who are panicking, tell them to calm down and boost their morale by telling them that you will all survive. Your desire and patience will reap you numerous rewards.
To get the attention that you need, build large, bright-colored shapes on the island. If there is a radio available, contact possible rescue teams. You can also use mirrors, flashlights and bonfires to attract attention.
