How to Survive a Plane Crash
Traveling by plane is relatively safe, even if you are hundreds of feet above the ground. With the number of flights traveling daily, only a few crash each year. Some people even believe that a plane ride is safer than riding an automobile. Though, despite all of the aircraft’s safety measures, you should still be ready for disaster. Not many people survive a plane crash. Chances are, you can be one of the lucky survivors, if you just know what to do.
The survival rate of plane crashes is pretty slim, regardless of strategies. Though, you can raise the chances for survival if you get a little resourceful. You must know some facts or details about the plane and assume a crash landing posture, which covers all of the body’s sensitive points. Confused? Here are a few strategies that you can follow.
Survival Strategy 1: The Ball Posture
The objective of the ball posture is to protect your body’s tender parts, which means the head, genital area, abdomen and neck. The back, composed of large bones and thick skin, can take more punishment than some of the other parts of your torso. The same goes with your knees, thighs and legs. So if you expose only the durable areas, you just might walk out of the large piece of crushed metal with your life. Here’s how you do the posture:
While seated, raise both your knees on the chair’s sitting surface.
Duck your head and place it in-between your chest and thighs.
Join your hands then set them on your head and the back of your neck.
Once done, pull your elbows down, so your head is completely covered.
Compress yourself, as if your are assuming the shape of a ball.
Lean on the seat in front of you. Make sure your much of your weight is pressed on the seat.
A plane crash can surely crush every limb of your body, but if you are lucky, you might only collide with the seats and some parts of the plane’s interior. With the ball posture applied, you can survive hits from fairly hard objects, as long as they are not sharp. Never mind the broken bones. At least, you’re still alive.
Survival Strategy 2: Know How Far You Are from the Exit
If you sense trouble while inside an aircraft, count how many rows away you are from the exit. That way, you can easily exit a burning plane when it lands.
You can also try to locate the plane’s emergency parachutes and know their exact distance away from you. When the plane is about to crash, all the people will be panicking. Keep your composure, as you make your way towards the parachutes. Grab one then dash towards the exit.
Survival Strategy 3: Follow the Plane’s Crash Landing Procedures
Remember the safety procedures demonstrated by the stewardess during the early part of the flight? Those measures certainly improve your chances for survival. The problem is, most people totally panic when placed in such a situation. Try to keep yourself calm. Recall all of the procedures, from the oxygen mask down to the life jacket. Perform all of the appropriate ones and who knows, you might come out of the plane alive, or even unscathed.
Survival Strategy 4: Get the Back Seats
In many crashes, the plane nosedives onto an area at breakneck speeds. Sometimes the crash obliterates only the front and middle portions of the aircraft, leaving the ones who stayed at the back alive. You can take a page out of those survivors’ books and make it a point to always reserve the back seats. Some people may also know this strategy, so you should book your tickets early.
Survival Strategy 5: Think Positive
Think of the days when every scenario seems to be going in your favor. The common denominator of all those days is total positivity. Sometimes the universe those people with a string of favorable moments, some of them seemingly miraculous. If you firmly believe that you will live through the ordeal, when your plane is about to crash, the cosmic forces just might give you what you want. You can pray, chant or meditate, to reinforce your positive thinking.

No conclusive evidence has been documented to prove that applying these methods will give you a greater chance of survival. Though, some plane crash survivors actually did some of the mentioned strategies, which eventually helped them get away with their lives.
