How to Paddle a Kayak
To learn how to paddle a kayak, you should first master the basic forward stroke. Find a pool or a still body of water to practice this basic kayak move as currents or waves that can be found in rivers or oceans can rock your boat.
By starting to learn in calm water, you can easily adjust to the boat and the correct paddling techniques. Grab a partner now, your kayak and floatation device and start paddling away. Here are some tips to get you started:
Maintain proper position.

It is crucial for you to maintain proper position since you may strain your back or injure your knee cap if you just paddle away without conforming your body the right way.
Handle your paddle properly by starting your hands near your shoulder centered and width apart. Make sure that the angle of your elbows is at 90 degrees once you place the center of your paddle atop your head.
Paddle away.
Start with the basics by mastering the forward power stroke. First, the paddle blade should be submerged in the water somewhere near your feet. It is important for the paddle blade to be pulled back all the way towards your hip. Do the same on the opposite side by lifting the paddle blade.
To turn the boat, use a sweep stroke. Make the boat turn away from the paddle blade by letting the paddle drift out to the side in an arc.
Be safe at all times.
Don’t be too carefree in the water and always wear a life jacket. All kayaks are mandated by Coast Guard regulations to have a life jacket on board. Also, never ever drink alcohol or use prohibited drugs while boating.
Ask the locals for any changes in currents, weather and shoreline conditions if you are paddling in a relatively new area. Before paddling, you should learn how to properly paddle first while taking note of first aid techniques and other water safety tips.
The weather conditions and water temperature may change so be prepared for the possibility of any accidents. Wear the proper suit to provide safety and protection especially if your boat capsizes.
Before leaving, tell someone your plans, including your destination, companions and how long you’ll be away.
Just remember all the tips above and your kayak adventure will surely be more fun and safer.
