How to Build a Boat Dock
A dock, as you know, is a parking place. As the name suggests, a boat dock is a place where boats can park. Boats also use boat docks for leverage. Boat docks can be made out of various different types of materials, depending on the requirements. The most commonly used material is wood, some boat docks are even made out of aluminum (in case of metal).
The initial step in building a boat dock would be to work out the required size that the dock will be. For determining that, you need to have a good knowledge about the place that you are going to build your dock. The boat dock has to be placed at a particular distance from the land. You need to know that distance. Then, and only then, you can build the dock.
The dock can now be divided as the lounge division and the boarding division. The lounge division will be a square region where people wait. The boarding division will be continuation of the lounge and a rectangle passage. It’s vital to decide whether the dock will be on posts or a floating one. Whatever the case maybe, the construction of the dock will be the same. But if it.s going to be on posts, there will be four huge logs of wood that will be pivoted into the land under water and the dock will be placed on top of it.
The construction of lounge will normally be four by four (4 * 4) i.e. four feet in length and four feet in breath. Just the 4*4 plank of log will not be enough for the lounge, you need to provide support for it. What you need to do is provide planks facing down on all sides of the main plank. This would make it look like a box without a bottom. Once you make this, it will be easy to make it float, and it can also withstand more weight. The side planks must be properly screwed down so that they hold on firmly to the main plank. Apart from screws, you can even make use of eyebolts, which add strength to the hold.
Now that the lounge is ready, you need to make the boarding passage ready. The procedure for making this is very similar to the lounge; the only difference is the dimensions. Once this is ready, it has to be attached to the lounge to ensure that no gap is present in between these, as people may
fall.
A pole of wood is essential near the dock in order to hold the boats. Generally, the boats in the dock are tied to huge poles of wood, which prevent them from moving away due to wind. It will also be useful while people are boarding the boat. Enjoy building your own boat dock.
