How to Glaze Cabinets
Are you tired of how your kitchen looks? If you’ve been wanting to redo this part of your house but don’t have enough money for a total kitchen make over, glazing your cabinets is a good idea. A glazed cabinet would go well on any kind of style you want to use in your kitchen. Here are some easy ways to glaze cabinets.
Things You’ll Need:
Glaze medium
Paint thinner
Natural bristle brush
Lint- free cloths
Paint or stain
Drop cloth
Steps:
Prepare your working area by laying out a drop cloth. Cover areas that might accidentally get stained or painted on.
Prepare the mixture. You can either buy premixed glazes or mix one by yourself.
To make a glaze, combine paint and solvent. You can use water or buy a paint thinner. The common ratio used for making glaze is 1 part paint and 1 part solvent. You can alter the amount of paint or solvent to have your desired color.
Apply the glaze following the natural grain of the wood. Use a natural bristle brush for applying the stain. Make sure not to leave out any area. Take special notice of the corners as these areas are usually easy to miss.
Use a lint-free cloth to wipe off the stain. While the glaze is still wet, wipe off the surface to remove a small layer of glaze.
Checking Your Work:
Frequently move away from the cabinet to check your work.
Look for missed spots.
If you made a mistake or don’t like the result you got from wiping off the stain, you can redo your work by simply wiping the stain off the cabinet using a clean cloth dipped in hot water.
Tips:
A natural bristle brush or a china brush will give your cabinets a cleaner look.
Don’t try to achieve uniformity in the looks of your cabinet as the results may slightly vary from one cabinet to the other.
Finish one cabinet first before starting on a new one.
Glazing is another way of decorating your cabinets and even your walls. Create an aged look and have a sentimental atmosphere around your homes by having glazed walls and cabinets. You can also match this style with antique furniture and decorations.
