How to Treat a Swollen Joint
Swollen joints are usually caused by a number of things, ranging from inconsequential to life-threatening. They can also be caused by joint injury and a small amount of internal bleeding. When that happens, the skin and the tissue surrounding the area can be stretched and it will swell with fluid buildup.
If the swollen joint isn’t caused by any underlying problem and it’s not a recurring problem, you can use these steps to help relieve the pain and make movements easier. Here’s how you can treat a swollen joint.
Warm Poultice
Tools
Water
Thick cloth
Apple cider vinegar
Procedure
Mix a cup of apple cider vinegar and a cup of water. Heat the liquid in a microwave or a pan until it is warm but still bearable to the touch.
Apply the mixture directly over the swollen joint as a poultice. Keep it warm by covering it with a thick cloth.
Keep repeating the steps and applying the poultice over the swollen joint for 30 minutes. Do this method throughout the day, especially if you’re feeling pain from the swollen joint.
Cold Compress
Another quick way to relieve swollen joint pain is to apply cold compress to your swollen joint. Apply the cold compress for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, repeating every two to three hours until the swelling goes down or when the pain is reduced.
Putting a bandage around the compression can also help reduce swelling.
Arnica
Arnica can either come in herb form or in cream form. You can apply arnica directly on the area of the swollen joint to help reduce swelling and pain.
Avoid Exercise
Avoid strenuous activity and high-impact exercises on body areas where the swollen joint is found. Do not lean or put any weight behind the swollen joint.
However, don’t completely let your swollen joint area go without exercise. Consult your doctor on what kind of exercises you can do to help make your swollen joint recover faster.
