How to Treat an Infected Wound
If wounds are not managed properly, they might become infected, which can lead to various complications. Here are some steps you can follow to treat wound infection.
Steps:
Wash hands. Avoid putting more bacteria on the wound by washing your hands properly. Use an antibacterial soap. Rub your hands together. Wash the spaces between your fingers.
Put clean gloves on to prevent the spread of infection.
Carefully remove the bandages. Discard the bandages and dressing appropriately.
Assess the wound. Check for signs of infection. Pain, inflammation, pus, foul odor and excessive drainage are the things that you should take note of.
Use an antiseptic solution to clean the wound. You can use Povidone- iodine or what is commercially known as Betadine for cleaning the infected wound.
Make a solution of 50% Povidone-iodine and 50% sterile water.
Use cotton swabs or cotton balls to clean the would. Dip the cotton on the solution and apply on the wound. Make sure to frequently change cotton swabs. Discard the used cottons properly.
Be sure to clean all areas of the wound, especially for irregularly shaped wounds.
Carefully remove the pus with cotton swabs.
Let the solution sit for about 15 to 30 minutes.
Wash the wound with sterile water.
Wipe the wound dry using a sterile gauze.
Apply an antibiotic ointment on the wound.
Dress and cover the wound.
Tips:
Keep in mind that there are certain antibiotics that work only for certain bacteria. Knowing the kind of antibiotic to use is important.
There are two kinds of infection: local and systemic. In addition to all the signs of infection, fever may indicate a systemic infection.
For mild infection, you can use warm water for cleaning the wound. Warm water mixed with 2 tablespoons of salt is also a good antiseptic solution.
You may take oral medication to treat infection. You have to consult your doctor for a prescription.
Chronic wound infections are treated a bit differently. Contact your health care provider if you have pressure ulcers or diabetic foot ulcers.
It’s very important to take care of your wound properly to avoid complications. Hygiene is vital in preventing infections. Remember the signs of infection and consult your doctor if the condition worsens.
