How to Downhill Ski
Skiing downhill is an exhilarating experience, but you must remember that there are precautions and risks associated with this activity. You must first learn the basic techniques when doing this sport. Here are some helpful tips to remember when you’re planning to ski downhill.
Purchase a quality pair of skis, poles and boots from a sporting goods store. Ask the salesperson to help you get the correct ski length and adjust the ski bindings so they fit your boots well. If your skis are too long, maneuvering them can be difficult, and those that are too short will slow you. If you’re a beginner, you might want to rent these items first; you might find out later that skiing is not for you.
Take a beginner lesson. You must learn the basic techniques and safety precautions of skiing. You can also watch others as they ski downhill, taking note of how they get off the chairlift and how they move.
When you feel that you’re ready, you can start skiing. Begin by getting into a comfortable stance, your knees bent slightly, and the shins pressing against the boot tongues. Your hands must be in peripheral vision.
Get the feel of your weight on the balls of your feet. Remember that your body’s weight mass is carried continually forward on the skis, to help you when you turn.
Shift your weight from the downhill ski, then to the the uphill ski, so you can get down the mountain. When you’re lifting the tail of the downhill ski, shift your weight slightly.
Using your wrist, swing the downhill pole tip forward, while you extend your uphill ski. Lightly touch the snow using the extended ski, so the turn downward will begin.
Control your speed, using a light change during the turning process. Round the turn’s completion by moving your skis a bit uphill. Try various widths of the turn while going downhill. Switch from large to medium, then small turns.
Keep practicing. Ski more than once a year to improve your skills and techniques. You’ll soon get the hang of it.
Keep honing your skiing skills, and you’ll soon master the art of going downhill gracefully. Remember, only ski when you’re with someone, and during good weather, to prevent accidents. Have fun!
