Cement is the primary adhesive used for erecting structures such as houses, bridges and buildings. People also use it for smaller projects like renovations and constructing home sections, given its holding power. You can purchase cement from manufacturers but if you have all the necessary materials, you might as well make the powerful adhesive.
Types of Cement that You can Create
You have two basic options for creating cement. Just pick a cement type according to the holding power that you need.
Portland Cement Alternative – holding heavy wooden/concrete structures
Liquid Cement – wooden items, glass objects, cardboard
Decent Alternative to Portland Cement
Cement is composed of calcium, aluminum, iron and silicon. When all four ingredients are processed, the resulting substance hardens after being mixed with water. Creating real Portland cement requires heavy construction equipment for all the processes, that is seemingly impossible for normal homeowners. You can instead create an alternative product that uses readily available materials and only a single industrial device.
The Kiln
The kiln comes as the heating device used to break down the cement’s components. Normal ovens will not work because they are not built to produce thousands of degrees continuously for 12 hours. If you want to produce your own cement, you must purchase this product from kiln dealers or construction equipment stores. You can also visit a pottery store and have your raw materials heated.
Materials Used:
kiln
limestone
sand
water
gravel
Procedure:
Purchase limestone, sand and gravel from a cement manufacturer.
If you have money to burn, have a kiln assembled from a manufacturer. If not, you can skip this step.
Gather the limestone, sand and gravel then place them inside the kiln. If you don’t have a kiln, bring the raw materials to a pottery manufacturer and have the raw materials heated.
Heat the rocks at 1000 degrees Celsius or above for about 12 hours.
After heating, the materials should appear partially molten. Add water to remove lumps from the substance.
Add some sand to create a paste-like material.
Add the gravel to the mixture. Stir the mixture thoroughly, until it thickens.
Once the mixture thickens, your Portland cement alternative is ready to use. It may not be as strong as real Portland cement, but it can surely hold up heavy wooden structures. It can even act as a wall foundation, if you plan to build extra rooms and halls to your home.
Liquid Cement
Liquid cement is your substitute for superglue. It is primarily used for adjoining small and medium sized items. Preparing this solution is simple. You just need to mix the raw materials together until they thicken.
Materials Used:
1 pound shellac resin
1 gallon waterglass
2 quarts water
oven
pots
Procedure:
Purchase the shellac resin and waterglass from a hardware store or a construction materials dealer.
Heat the resin on your oven. Press and stir the mixture until the resin dissolves.
On a separate pot, mix the waterglass with water. Add the shellac solution slowly as you mix the waterglass solution.
Continue mixing the solution until it thickens.
Just like the Portland cement alternative, liquid cement is ready to use the moment it thickens. Be sure to create the substance only at the moment when you truly need it.
Purchasing cement is still more convenient than creating it yourself. You can just use your knowledge in creating cement for emergency purposes. Who knows, it might bail you out of a tight spot.
