Why is electrolysis an oxidation reaction ?

If electrons are exchanged in a reaction, it is called oxidation reaction. In the process of electrolysis, positive ions take electrons from the cathode (oxidation) and negative ions leave electrons (oxidation) at the anode. Therefore , electrolysis is an oxidation process.
