Why is the presence of sulfur in coal harmful ?

1 Answer

Answer :

: When energy is produced by burning coal, the sulfur in it is oxidized by oxygen in the air to form SO₂, SO₃ . The resulting SO₂ combines with rainwater to form acid rain, which poses a threat to the environment and wildlife. The SO₂ and SO₃ produced also enter the lungs and cause various respiratory diseases. For these reasons the presence of sulfur in coal is harmful.
