Answer : Every computer needs a special interface to connect to any network media. The network interface card or LAN card works on this interface. It is also known as network adapter and LAN card. This network adapter can be used to connect computers to any media. There are different network adapters for different media and those computers can be connected to the network with suitable connectors. Not only servers or workstations have network interface cards , printers or other devices may also have network interface cards. The first step in connecting one device to another begins with the network interface card. It plays a special role in both source and destination computers. The network interface card works on the data link layer of the OSI reference model. NIC basically works as a modem. This is why NIC card is also called internal modem.
