East Berlin existed from 1949 to 1990. It covered the eastern part of Berlin and was formed in 1945 by the Soviet sector of Berlin (Germany's Allied Territory). West Berlin was made up of the American , British and French sectors , some of which directly aided West Germany. From 13th August , 1971 to 9th November , 1989, East Berlin and West Berlin were separated by the Berlin Wall. The East German government simply referred to East Berlin as Berlin or Berlin , Hauptstadt de Dade (Berlin , the capital of the GDR). Until 1980, the term "democratic sector" was also used.
