1971 The first initiative was taken to build a nuclear power plant. 1972-1977 Rooppur on the banks of river Padma in Ishwardi police station of Pabna district was selected as the site of the first nuclear power plant in the country. 260 acres of land was acquired for the nuclear power project and 32 acres for residential areas. 1989-1980 The then government of Pakistan canceled the decision to implement this project of 200 MW power generation. 1982-1975 Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took the initiative to build a nuclear power plant with a capacity of 200 MW. ECNEC approves project for construction of nuclear power plant (125 MW) But due to various limitations the project was not implemented. A second feasibility study was conducted by two German and Swiss companies in 1981-1988. The study recommended the construction of a 300-500 MW nuclear power plant. 1996-2000 Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission then chairman. Initiative was taken by MA Wazed Mia to implement the Rooppur Nuclear Power Project with a capacity of 600 MW. 2008 The election manifesto of the Awami League in 2008 promised to implement the Rooppur nuclear power project. In 2009, the development work for the construction of nuclear power plant and development of nuclear infrastructure was started through the development project titled 'Performance of Essential Functions for Establishment of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant'. On 13 May 2009, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and the State Atomic Energy Corporation of the Russian Federation (Rosatom) on 'Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy'.
