(i) f we substitute x = √2, we get L.H.S. = 2x - 3 = 2(√2) - 3 = 2√2 - 3 and R.H.S = x / 2 - 2 = √2 / 2 - 2 ∴ L.H.S. ≠ R.H.S . Hence, √2 is not a solution of 2x - 3 = x / 2 - 2 (ii) If we substitute x = 3 , we get L.H.S. = (5/2)x + 3 = (5/2) (3) + 3 = 152 / 2 + 3 = (15 + 6) / 2 = 21 / 2 and R.H.S. = 21 / 2 ∴ L.H.S. = R.H.S . Hence , 3 is a solution of (5/2)x + 3 = 21 / 2 . (iii) If we substitute u = -1 , we get L.H.S. = 24 - 3{(-1) - 2} = 24 - 3(-1-2) = 24 - (-9) = 24 + 9 = 33 and R.H.S. = u + 8 = -1 + 8 = 7 ∴ L.H.S. ≠ R.H.S . Hence , -1 is not a solution of 24 - 3 (u - 2) = u + 8
