The cricket match had to be abandoned because of the retreating monsoon. A high pressure centre begins to build up over the southern region due to the migration of the sun towards the south. By the first week of October the South-west monsoon begins to withdraw from the country. The monsoon moves southwards and causes rain in the southern districts (Chennai) at the end of October.
