1. Local leaders from Amritsar and elsewhere were picked up by the British rulers. Also, Gandhiji was barred from entering Delhi. The police in Amritsar further open fired upon a peaceful procession, thereby, provoking widespread attacks in banks, post offices and railway stations. 2. The imposition of martial law was another brutal measure adopted by the British. Hundreds were killed in Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar when General Dyer open fired on a large crowd after blocking the exit points. With the motive of spreading a feeling of terror in the minds of the satyagrahis, he took advantage of the situation inside Jallianwala Bagh (people were unaware of martial law) and killed many innocent people. 3. The news of Jallianwala Bagh incident further arose the anger of Indians, provoking widespread clashes with the police and attack on government buildings. The British again responded with brutal repression because of which satyagrahis were forced to rub their noses on the ground, crawl on the streets and do salaam (salute) to all sahibs.
