Answer :

I can’t see how it would cause the tank to rot, but if you don’t cut off the supply and a leak does occur, the water will just keep on coming. If the supply is cut, the tank would still empty in the event of a leak, but at least it would stop once it’s empty. The safest solution might be to both cut the supply and open the hot water tap to depressurize the tank.
