Just a guess… but a lot of checking accounts come with overdraft protection, which is essentially a line of credit. Even without overdraft protection, a poor credit rating is probably considered an indicator as to whether you’re likely to bounce checks. Bounced checks and the associated hassle are costs for the bank as well.
