Perhaps consider volunteering your time for your long time friend. There will be plenty of opportunities to make money later. It sounds like there’s already a good exchange happening. You get to add to your professional portfolio and you’d be doing your friend a huge favor, like friends do. I’ve done this before and the only money exchanged was for the cost of consumables.
