If you want to connect to 3G+ you will need to have a data sim which will normally cost a monthly charge so that you can connect to the internet on the move. This may or may not include data charges depending on your contract. I think you can always use the iPad without a sim and rely on WiFi to do your downloading but then why spend all that money getting an iPad and not pay for a data sim when you can get another tablet computer for ⅓ the price which you can only use WiFi on and not have the option for 3G. If you are spending so much money getting an iPad it is worth spending the monthly fee paying for your 3G in my eyes. I can’t afford that so I got an Archos 10.1 android tablet computer for £150 which can only rely on WiFi or tether it to my 3G internet on my phone so I am not paying for two 3G contracts.
