Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. A protocol used by a host, as it boots, to learn various network  information, such as its IP address.  
 - relies on the existence of a DHCP server  
-centralized repository for host configuration information  
-problem faced by DHCP is server discovery  
-relay agent receives DHCPDISCOVER message  
- unicast to DHCP server and awaits the response  
- send back to the requesting client  
-DHCP relay agent receives a broadcast DHCPDISCOVER message from a host  - sends a unicast DHCPDISCOVER message to the DHCP server
