answer:Years ago, there was a government program called VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). I don’t know if the program still exists. It was sort of a home-based Peace Corps; all the assignments were within the U.S. borders. Participants had their housing and other basic living needs covered, and they may have received small stipends, but they did volunteer their services. If you have any background in medical care, counseling, dentistry, or nutrition, The U.S. Public Health Service and Indian Health Service offer similar opportunities. My cousin, a kind-hearted dentist, volunteers for IHS for a few weeks every year. He doesn’t get paid wages or a salary, but IHS covers his travel and expenses during those weeks.
