But there’s are at least two big differences between the Durbin stunt and Facebook. First, Zuck was asked if he would volunteer it. He said no. In Facebook, you may “technically” volunteer it, but to do anything useful on Facebook you pretty much have to trade in your privacy. Zuck could opt out with no repercussions. You and I on facebook – really can’t. Second, and more important: Facebook takes your data and sells it (and you) to everyone who is willing to pay for it. Durbin’s question would have been a one-time response by Zuck, and the information wouldn’t have been sold to a thousand advertisers. So the Durbin stunt was rather silly and proved absolutely nothing. That said, anyone who uses Facebook who hasn’t turned their privacy settings to VERY PRIVATE is an idiot.
