Periodic measurement of rotor impedance using an AC power supply is another means of detecting the presence of shorted turns in a rotor winding. Impedance measurement is more sensitive than the resistance measurement for the detection of shorted turns. This is because the induced backward current in a single shorted turn opposes the MMF of the entire coil, thus greatly reducing the reactance.
