Once in a while, a bear wanders into northeast Iowa from Minnesota or Wisconsin, but they are not established in the state. Prior to the late 19th century, bears and cougars were the top predators in the state, mostly eating deer, but European settlers wiped them out (along with the deer). In the late 20th century, the deer came back, but not the predators.
