Upholstery fabric, corduroy, denim, and canvas are the best choices for making cushions. How to Make a CushionCut your fabric out by placing the right sides together, and add one inch to the size of the cushion form to add for a half inch seam allowance on each side. Add enough to allow for the height of the pillow form as well. Batting is not suggested, since it will eventually bunch up in the wash.Place the fabrics right side together, and pin around the edges.Sew around three sides, stopping at each corner with the needle in the fabric, lifting the presser foot, and turning the fabric to ensure a nice, crisp corner. Begin sewing the final side, but sew only a fourth of the way into the side. Back stitch to secure your seam. Sew a fourth of the way on the other edge of that side as well, leaving a space in the middle half the size of the pillow.Carefully trim your corners with your scissors.Turn your cushion cover right side out, and use a pencil to poke the corners out sharply. Stuff the cushion form inside it.Hand sew the opening shut, and tie your thread off.Repeat until you have your desired number of pillows.Decorating With CushionsCushions can take your room from sterile to warm in no time at all. Add coordinating rather than matching cushions to your sofa. Repeat a pattern from your sectional to your recliners and chairs. Pull colors and themes together through the use of cushions scattered throughout the room. When you're ready to choose fabrics for your cushions, take along paint swatches or photos from the room you'll be decorating so that you can get the look exactly right, no guessing necessary.
