The wild, Wild West was a unique period of time in American history when there was a great spirit of adventure and rugged individualism. Riding into town on their horses, Cowboys were considered the toughest of all men. Before Superman and Batman, cowboys were the super heroes that young boys looked up to and sought to emulate. The popularity of the cowboy in America became widespread once Hollywood and the movie industry began making the great westerns that captured the interest of millions. Stars like Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and John Wayne had a major impact and every little boy wanted to be a cowboy. Cowboys and Indians, which may no longer be politically correct, was a game that kids all across the country wanted to play. No one wanted to assume the role of the Indian, but everybody wanted to be the cowboy. Today, there are still cowboys that work on ranches, herd cattle and participate in rodeos all around the country. They may no longer carry their six shooters around their waist when they head into town in their $40,000 pickup trucks for a cup of coffee at Starbucks, but they still represent the hard-working American man. A cowboy costume is one of the more popular themes when kids dress up for Halloween. Outfitted with the traditional white cowboy hat, a red bandana, checkered shirt, blue jeans and boots, your little cowboy is ready to take on the evil forces that threaten the good people of the small western town he represents. Make sure he has his belt that holds his shiny six-shooter and plenty of bullets before he leaves the homestead. Role playing is a big part of any child's development and cowboys make good role models. Putting together a cowboy costume is pretty easy. Most of the things you need your child probably already has. Get an old pair of jeans, a checkered, button down, long-sleeved shirt and a pair of leather boots out of the closet and then buy him a white cowboy hat and a toy gun. If you do not have any of the basic things at home, you can buy a complete cowboy costume at most costume shops. Giddy-up cowboy!
