How do you feel about visiting your student's homes? Do you think it is a safe practice? Home visits can be a rewarding experience, but have to be embraced with patience, safety, and understanding. There are four reasons why home visits are important in Education. These reasons include the following:§Better Insight into Students: By visiting a student's home environment, individuals are able to really understand the student's life and responsibilities. This will definitely give teachers a better insight into how education is valued and most importantly, it can help you assess whether the student and the family would benefit from outside resources, such as a community outreach service.§Build Rapport with Families: When families see that their children's teacher is willing to visit their home, they will tend to build a relationship with the teacher. However, they will test the boundaries to see if their child's teacher is truly committed and not part of a scheme. Most parents and students will exercise their common sense when dealing with school officials. Therefore, it is very important to be candid and understanding when working with diverse learners.§Ask Direct Questions Regarding Education: Home visits do not afford individuals the chance to ask those burning, sensitive questions that they may want to ask. Rather, it is a way to listen to concerns or answer questions that parents may not feel comfortable saying while at a traditional school environment. This is the perfect opportunity to explain how concepts will be covered in the classroom and what types of assessments the students will be required to take for the upcoming testing season. This is also an opportunity to provide tutor references to help the family if a learning need arises.§Positive Image for School Community:This is the time in which teachers have a great opportunity to build a positive image regarding their school or learning organization. Most of the time, parents are very unaware of the many great programs and services that are available to both their children and them. By visiting with them at home, it provides families the opportunity to hear it directly from one of the school officials regarding their child's education.Home visits are great to get to know student's families better and continue to build a positive school and home relationship so that students can reap the benefits in the classroom.
