Two words are used frosting and icing. Icing was used around1769 in the confectionery sense, it is the gerund of ice.Frosting and icing both refer to a cooked granulated sugar andegg white mixture spread on cakes and allowed to harden so that itresembled ice. Icing actually existed before frosting.
