If we look at the "central dogma" of Biology: DNA ¨ RNA ¨ Protein, it is clear that the DNA molecule (that keeps the "information" in its double-stranded conformation) produces an RNA molecule (a single strand molecule) in the event known as "transcription". This RNA molecule is "translated" into a protein (during the translation event) in order to give a biological response. In resume, the RNA molecule is the single-stranded molecule composed by a sequence of nucleotides, that comes from the DNA molecule, and is translated into a protein.
