The only mention of Anne in Shakespeare's will was the gift ofthe bed. But that doesn't mean that Anne was cut off with nothingmore than a bed to her name. By law she had Dower rights whichwould have precedence over whatever the will said, including aright to a sizeable share of the estate and the right to continueliving in the family home. Shakespeare appears to have beensatisfied that Anne should have her Dower rights and a bed. Indeed, she may have agreed to it. The fact that most of the estate (afterDower) went to Susannah and her husband Dr. Hall suggests that thiswas part of the deal made when he agreed to marry her, which Annewould have been privy to.
