Amos was one of God's prophets. And like many of God's prophets, Amos testified and witnessed to his generation of their departure from God's Laws and ways; as well as prophesying of the latter end of God's plan and the coming world-ruling Kingdom of God. Amos's contemporary mission was to warn the Northern Kingdom of Israel to "repent" of their ways or God would REMOVE them from their land.Halley's Bible Handbook says: "This prophecy seems to have been delivered on a visit to Bethel (7:10-14), about 30 years before the fall of Israel. Amos was a prophet of Judah, the Southern Kingdom, with a message to Israel, the Northern Kingdom, in the reigns of Uzziah king of Judah (787-735 B.C.), and Jeroboam II king of Israel (790-749, 1:1)." (Halley's Bible Handbook with the King James Version: Classic Edition - AMOS p.358)"...Jonah and Elisha were passing off the stage as Amos was coming on... Hosea was a co-worker with Amos. He may have been in Bethel at the time of Amos' visit. They, no doubt, knew each other well, and may often have compared notes on the messages God had given them. Hosea was the younger, and continued his work after Amos was gone. Then, too, just as Amos was closing his work, Isaiah and Micah were beginning theirs..." (Amos' Contemporaries: pg. 358)Amos wasn't a "visionary"... but a servant or "agent" of God sent to Israel to call them back to obedience to the terms of God's covenant [to "...OBEY MY VOICE..." - Ex.19:5]. Israel's impending CAPTIVITY was in the offing... and eventually occurred due to the kingdom's stubbornness to refuse to repent:"...'Captivity,' is one of the key words of the book (1:5, 15; 5:5, 27; 6:7; 7:9, 17). Within 50 years these predictions were fulfilled..." (Doom of Israel and Neighbor Nations: p.359)But, like all the prophets of God, Amos, too, looked forward to the future and prophesied of God's "gospel" [good news] of Christ and His coming Kingdom:"...'all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the Law of Moses, and IN THE PROPHETS, and in the Psalms, CONCERNING ME..." (Luke 24:44)."Further prediction of Captivity (1:8).Within 30 years it came to pass, and the apostate kingdom ceased to exist. The restored Throne of David (8:15). An ever-recurrent prophetic vision of radiant days beyond the gloom. Amos lived near Bethlehem, the city of David. He took it to heart that the Ten Tribes had renounced the Davidic Throne, which God had ordained for His people, and for 200 years had obstinately declined to return to its fold. His last word: In coming days David's Kingdom, which they had despised, will recover, and rule, not over one nation only, but over a World of Nations, in Eternal Glory." (Future Glory of David's Kingdom: p.360)See Isaiah 9:6-7): "...the Government shall be upon His shoulder... Of the increase of His Government and Peace there shall be no end, UPON THE THRONE OF DAVID, and upon His Kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with Judgment and with Justice from henceforth even FOR EVER. The ZEAL of the **** will PERFORM THIS."
