A mutation in a gene can happen by addition, deletion orsubstitution of base pairs. This means that the order of the baseswill change- a new base may be added, a base may be lost, or onebase may be substituted for another.The result of these mutations is that it causes the DNA to codefor a different protein. If a mutation occurs in a sex cell, themutation can be passed on to an offspring and affect theoffspring's phenotype.
