Why do snails climb on the sidewalk after the rain?

When it rains, I walk along the sidewalk and sometimes I step on one by mistake. Why are they doing this?

Answer :

Because it's not dry - so the sidewalk is no longer an unpleasant surface for them. Earthworms, in turn, lick because the topsoil is soaked - and they don't want to drown.
