How to Make Clip-On Earrings
Clip-on earrings are a great alternative for people who don’t want their ears pierced. However, earring design choices can be quite slim for this kind of earring, so the best way to get the clip-on earrings that you want? Make your own, of course! You can even convert pierced earrings to clip-ons. Here’s how:
Clip-On Earrings
Tools
Clip-on earring findings, either screw-in findings or basic clip-ons
Jump rings
Pliers
Head pins or eye pins, depending on earring design
Glass, plastic or crystal beads, depending on earring design
Procedure
When choosing earring findings (the ones that actually attach to your ear), consider your earring design and the material you intend to use. Glass and crystal beads are heavy, and using more of them may require a stronger hold. If that is the case, choose screw-in findings. For earrings using lighter material, go for basic clip-ons.
Choose a color combination or a configuration for your earrings. Chandelier earrings typically require more time and effort, and calls for much more than just head pins or eye pins. As it were, you can also make very pretty earrings from either head pins or eye pins alone.
Insert the beads into the the head pins or eye pins. Leave a fifth of the the pin free of beads.
Use the pliers to curve the tail end of the eye pin or head pin that you’re using to “seal” in the beads on the pin. Make sure that you curve the tail end just enough to allow the jump pin to hook through.
Use the pliers to slightly open the jump rings. Insert the hoop of the eye pin or head pin.
Hook the jump ring with the earring findings, and seal the jump ring using the pliers.
Do the same for the other earring.
Convert Pierced Earrings
Tools
Any pierced earrings, ideally drop or chandelier earrings. Make sure they have a loop attachment point or jump ring.
Clip-on earring findings, either screw-on or basic clip-ons
Pliers
Procedure
Converting pierced earrings to clip-on earrings is the easiest way to get the earrings you want without bothering with making your own design. Start by opening the jump ring and detaching the earring design from the earring pierced findings. Make sure you don’t lose the jump rings.
Hook the jump ring, the earring design to the clip-on earring finder’s loop. Close the jump loop using the pliers.
Do the same for the other clip-on earring.
