How to Tune a Car
Cars today have come a long way. In just a few years, many cars went from requiring a tune up every 2 years to going without one for up to 100,000 miles or more. With today’s car being more complex than ever, it can be difficult to do all the work yourself, however, there are many things that a car owner can do to ensure their car is safe and running properly. Here are just some of the ways to tune your car.
Some of the things you should have on hand, before you tune your car are your car’s manual and some basic tools. Before you decide to change the oil, filters or other items, first check with your car’s manual to see exactly what needs tinkering with. For many car owners, some of the items that one can look to see if it requires replacing or modification are: a new oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, new belts & hoses and if the tires are properly inflated and have good tread.
Oil & Oil Filter
While many of us bring our vehicles in for an oil change every 3,000 miles, if your car has been sitting idle for months or you would prefer to change your oil on your own, you can go ahead and do so. Make sure you use the proper grade oil for your vehicle and region (check with your car’s manual for details). Whenever you change your oil, you should also change your oil filter as well.
Air Filter
With today’s emphasis on saving gas, one of the ways to do so is with a clean air filter. You can usually unscrew the air filter cover and check to see if your air filter needs to be replaced. If it has gently faded in color, you are probably fine, however it is soiled with black marks, it should be immediately changed.
Spark Plugs
Generally speaking spark plugs are quite easy to change. However, if you are using platinum plugs, you might not need to change them every so often. Check to see what your car’s manual says and make sure you buy a spark plug gapping tool to ensure you spaced them correctly.
New Belts & Hoses
You can visually check your engine to make sure that all your belts and hoses are in good condition and secured tightly. If you see a rip occurring, some nicks, etc feel free to replace them. If your car is squeaking when it starts up, it is possible that a belt may be loose, in addition, if your air conditioning is not working properly- a belt may also be at fault.
Tires
Your car tires are incredibly important, not only for safety, but for good gas economy. Check to make sure that your tires are inflated properly. You can check the driver’s side door panel for information or your car’s manual. In addition, visibly check your tires to make sure that the treads are sufficient. Any tires with problems should immediately be replaced.
