Step One: Choosing The Right Trout Dough Bait
There are many different trout dough baits available in the market. The kind of bait you need depends on the kind of fishing you have in mind. Most baits are categorized into natural and artificial dough baits. Natural dough baits are made of regular dough mixed with fish meat, eggs, algae, marine fragrances, and oils. Their consistency can be either firm or soft, depending on the intended purpose. For bigger fish, firmer dough is advised. Some people prefer to use natural dough. You can make natural trout dough at home!
There are various brands of artificial dough available in the market. These are similar in look and feel to the play dough used by kids in play school. This dough too has artificial marine fragrances and fish oils, which when attached to the hook and submerged in water disperse in seawater to attract trout and other fish. This dough is, rather surprisingly, made of bright colors so that anglers can see them underwater. The artificial trout dough is available in varying degrees of firmness; both serious and casual anglers use them.
Step Two: Starting Out
The dough bait you use will depend on where you are fishing and what your objective is. Talk to fellow fisherfolk and anglers to find out what works best for them. It is a good idea to experiment as well.
Dough baits are not for the purpose of fishing at the bottom. The trout usually float on the top during the season. So, if the bait is not around, they will not catch it. It is advisable to use a lighter fishing line when you go for angling. Examples of such light fishing lines include the monofilament line and the fluorocarbon line. You can use one of these when you start out, with the right type of treble to help you catch the trout easily.
Step Three: Increasing Your Chances of Success
To increase your chances of success when using trout dough bait, it is important to keep a few points in mind. Mostly people use treble hooks of size 14 or 16, which is quite small, when using dough baits. However, to use dough bait successfully, it is important that the hook floats just off the bottom of the water to attract the cruising trout fish. Throw your hook with the bait attached to it, and ensure that it floats. If it does not do so by itself, take off some of the dough bait on the hook. But there is no cause for worry, if you do not. You are still likely to catch the trout.
The difference between trout dough bait and salmon eggs as bait is that the dough is designed to float off the bottom, where the bait is quite visible to the fish.
Tips
Make sure the trout dough bait, when used with the right line, floats off the bottom when you go fishing.
When aiming to catch bigger fish, it is advisable to go with firm dough so that the bite does not go right through the dough.
