How to Use a Fire Extinguisher
Fires are among the most common accidents that happen at homes, which is why it’s very important to get a fire extinguisher. This helpful equipment will help you fight and control the flames. Of course, when you get one, it’s imperative that you also know how to use it properly. Here’s what you should do.
What You’ll Need:
Fire extinguisher
Owner’s manual
Procedure:
As soon as you buy the fire extinguisher, find the user manual that came with it. Read it thoroughly to find out how to use it. There’s also a label (sometimes with photos) found at the fire extinguisher’s side. This can also tell you how to properly handle the equipment.

When you’re faced with an actual fire, hold the unit upright. Afterwards, pull out the pin from the side of the extinguisher. This pin is usually a plastic or metallic loop inserted in the pressure valve’s action area. Hold this pin in a way that your thumb is positioned on the pressure lever, while your hand grips the handle.
Position yourself between the nearest exit and the fire. In case you can’t put out the flames, you still have an escape.
Stand back from the fire, at least eight feet away. This distance will keep your vision clear, as smoke can be a difficult hindrance. Hold the hose in your other hand, the one not holding the extinguisher. Carefully aim the hose at the fire’s base. Many people’s mistake is they aim at the flames and not at the source. Choking out and smothering the fire’s base will stop the problem quicker.
Squeeze the lever firmly, then start sweeping side to side. Holding and aiming the extinguisher hose in just one spot won’t work. Sweep the area, at the fire’s base from left to right, covering the area around the fire. This will help you make sure that you’re getting all the important source.
Once you’ve extinguished the fire thoroughly, open a window, allowing better ventilation. Leave the room, then call the fire department to help take care of the problem.
Some Reminders:
Remember the acronym “P.A.S.S.” whenever you use the fire extinguisher. It stands for “Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Sweep”.
Never attempt to put out a fire that’s within your capacity. Call the fire department for extreme fires. Tying to be a hero can only put you in danger.
Teach your children how to use the fire extinguisher, too.
Fires are dangerous and fatal. As long as you have a trusty fire extinguisher at home and the right knowledge to use it, you can prevent this from happening.
