How to Train a Cockatiel
Many people enjoy taking care of cockatiels because of their ability to speak and repeat what they hear. This type of feathery friend is ideal for those who live in small apartments and for those who want to care for small birds who have verbal abilities. Do you want to train your very own cockatiel? Follow these simple tips:
Promote a sense of trust first.
Patting or handling your cockatiel while you are speaking to him will build trust between the two of you. It is recommended that you pat your bird for at least half an hour every day. Pat your bird regularly for trust and confidence to grow. You can do this while watching TV.
Pat him all around his body and beak area but avoid letting him on your shoulder so that he won’t get used to that habit. Let him try to climb from finger to finger and to your hands.
Use repetitive speech and a high-pitched voice.

You should also speak to your bird in a high-pitched voice since birds usually respond more often and better to sounds that are high-pitched. Deeper tones may be suitable also but higher pitches will lure your cockatiel into the learning process faster.
Say hello.
Upon entering the room, say “hello” and use your cockatiel’s name. Most cockatiels usually learn their names first as they associate it with the word “hello.” You can also try other simple words like “bye” or “birdie hungry” then work your way into teaching him a few sentences using the basic words you initially taught.
For instance, try teaching your bird the word “hello” first. Then after he has mastered it, try combining it with your name and your cockatiel will be forming a complete sentence.
Avoid distractions.
For your cockatiel to learn how to talk efficiently, you should clear the room of any distractions like TV programs, barking dogs, or noisy children playing. These can all divert your pet’s attention from the main goal. Close the door and try to establish one-on-one sessions regularly.
Handle your cockatiel as often as possible while training him to talk. The more you pet him, the more confidence you will build and the more he will talk.
