How to Train Your Puppy
Getting a puppy is one of the most exciting things you can do. Here are some tips to get your puppy training off on the right foot. It will make your life with your dog more enjoyable.
What You’ll Need:
Puppy
Doggie treats
Teaching Your Puppy To Potty Outside
Only discipline your puppy when you catch him in the act of going to the bathroom in your home. If you don’t catch him, you can’t punish him.
Once you catch him in the act, sternly tell him “NO” and take him outside. Once outside, he will continue to go to the bathroom, and when he does, you should praise him.
Remember that dogs learn by positive reinforcement, so if you praise your puppy, he will get the idea. It’s also okay to give your puppy a tasty reward for doing the right thing.
Keep in mind that potty training doesn’t happen over night and you will have several accidents all the way through the training stages.
Teaching Your Puppy To Sit
The key here is to put an action with a simple word that your dog can remember.
Push his bottom to the ground and once it’s there say “SIT” and “Good boy/girl”.
The key to this is that dogs don’t learn even simple commands over night, so don’t get frustrated that he doesn’t get it after one time.
Remember again that your puppy will learn from positive reinforcement. So, when your puppy sits on command, give him a treat and praise him.
Once you’ve taught your puppy to sit, it’s easy to teach new tricks by following the same techniques. I taught my puppy to give a high five and then wave. Just remember that positive reinforcement is the key. The sky is the limits at teaching your dog commands, as long as they know it’s good for them!
