Is it possible for you to wear your walking shorts to a formal dinner or your jogging pants to your cousin’s wedding? Of course, it is possible, but you will have to deal with your friends’ nasty one-liners and your parents’ stern lectures. A pair of pants is the most suitable bottom garment for formal events and elegant dinners. It pairs well with almost anything that you consider outside wear. If you do not have pants, you should not worry, since you can always make a few pairs during your free time.
Pants, nowadays, are quite expensive. Some pairs are priced well over a hundred dollars, which is not fit for people with modest budgets. You can get cheaper pairs in bargain stores and flea markets, but the quality of the pants will always be in question. To tell you the truth, your best option is to actually make your own pair of pants.
Fabrics used for pants are very cheap. When you create your own pants, your total expenditure will only be a fraction of what you will pay for a nice pair of pants. You can even get the same amount of quality and style of designer trousers if you are adept at creating pants. You only need sewing skills, good sewing equipment and a decent supply of fabric to weave a pair of pants.
Materials Used:
fabric (2 x 2 meters)
4 cotton sheets (5 x 5 inches)
tape measure
needle
thread
scissors
pencil
paper
1 large metal button
zipper
sewing machine (optional)
Make a Garment Plan
Before you create your pants, you should pick the style and the fabric you want to use. There are many different types of pants and each type has many styles and designs. You should determine what trouser type and design suits you best. Check out fashion magazines, the closets of your friends and fashion websites for ideas. When you have chosen the type of pants that you are going to make, get the measurement of your waistline, legs and thighs. Sketch your pants on a piece of paper along with the dimensions to create a garment plan.
Purchase the Fabric and Sewing Equipment
Go to a fabric store and check out the different designs and variations of your chosen fabric for your pants. When you have made a decision, purchase the fabric then head over to a needlework store. Look at the store’s selection of trouser buttons and pick one that best suits your fabric and the style of your pants. Buy a sturdy zipper then get all the needed sewing equipment that cannot be found in your sewing kit at home.
Create the Front and Back Sides
When you have assembled all the materials, get your fabric and cut it according to your leg, waist and thigh measurements. Refer to your garment plan so that you do not have to measure yourself all over again. Once done, cut out an identical sheet to create the back side of your pants.
The Front Side
Get the front side of your pants and make a slit on each side of the fabric. Sew the cotton sheets to the slits to create your pants’ pair of front pockets. When you are done with the pockets, make another slit in the middle portion of your pants’ front side. Sew the zipper to the opening then affix the button right above the zipper. On the opposite side, make an incision that is slightly bigger than the button to create a lock for the opening. Be precise with the size of the hole, because if you make it too big, the lock can easily swing open.
The Back Side
Now, you can shift your attention to the back side of your pants. Get your sewing equipment and a couple of cotton sheets then create two pockets on the bum area. You can stitch patterns and designs on the pockets if you choose.
The Belt Line
Sew both the front and the back sides together. Make sure that the hemlines are not completely visible, unless you are making jeans. Once done, cut out seven 1.5-inch strips from your remaining supply of fabric. Position the seven strips strategically on the top portion of your pants. Use your sewing equipment to affix them to the belt area.
At this point, all the sections of your pants have been completed. You can finally go to any formal event without any worries and with a lot of respect from your peers.
