Although more and more adults are being treated for ADHD, it is a behavioral condition that commonly manifests in preschoolers. Psychiatrists are one in saying that the condition is genetically triggered, which makes it hard to prevent. To control its effects, patients with ADHD must maintain a lifetime of medication and treatment.
Medication
Here are two of the most common ADHD medications.
Methylphenidate
Brand name: Concerta
Description: Concerta is one of the most commonly prescribed medications for ADHD. It is a stimulant that controls the chemicals in the brain and the nervous system and lessens hyperactivity and impulsiveness.
Consideration: Before taking this medication, consultations should be made with health providers. People using medications with active ingredients such as isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine, phenelzine, rasagiline and selegiline should not take Concerta simultaneously.
Side effect: Concerta can also worsen some conditions like glaucoma, Tourette’s syndrome and depression. People suffering from congenital heart disease, epilepsy, bipolar disorder or substance abuse must not take this drug.
As a stimulant, the drug can cause sudden death in both children and adults if not used with proper guidance.
Lisdexamfetamine
Brand name: Vyvanse
Description: It is also a stimulant that heightens control in the nervous system. This is also one of the commonly prescribed drugs in treating ADHD.
Consideration: Also a stimulant, Vyvanse should be taken with great caution. Aside from drugs with the same active ingredients as Concerta, people suffering from arteriosclerosis (the hardening of arteries), should consult their doctors prior to the usage of Vyvanze.
Side effect: Lisdexamfetamine is also dangerous to unborn children since it can result in premature birth and maldevelopment of the fetus. New mothers should also refrain from ingesting the drug because it can greatly affect breast milk. Lisdexamfetamine should not be used by children under six years for it can impair their growth.
ADHD is a condition that often needs to be controlled with medication. By knowing the description and side effects, people can prepare themselves with the possible consequences.
