Nets are a common sight in many of today’s sports. Basketball is simply not basketball without the swishing sensation the ball makes as it passes through the net on a fade away “nothing but net” field goal. The same goes for soccer, volleyball, tennis, hockey, table tennis and even badminton. You simply can’t have a game of badminton without a badminton net.
A badminton net is a piece of sports equipment used in the game of badminton to cover the vertical space between the opposite halves of the badminton court. The badminton net is used to act as a “wall”: a clean, legal stroke is one where the shuttlecock flies over the net onto the opponent’s side—not below the net, not through the net. Of course, recreational badminton does not require a net to be installed.
More On Badminton Nets
A typical badminton net measures 5 feet and 1 inch (or 1.55 meters) high at the edges and 5 feet (or 1.524 meters) high in the center. The posts for the net are positioned over the doubles side lines. This is true even when singles is being played.
A badminton player may only hit the shuttlecock once from his or her side before it passes over the net. The same rule applies during a service. In some cases, such as during a single stroke movement, the player can come into contact with the shuttlecock twice, leaving the impression that it was actually struck more than once. This is completely legal and is an accepted technique in many official tournaments.
Badminton nets are usually made out of strong nylon material. For low quality nets, cheaper materials may be used instead.
