I have been told to cut off the blooms on my new hydrangea, any purpose to that?

1 Answer

Answer :

I don't think that's a good idea.  Cutting all of the blooms off may inhibit blooming next year.  I have gorgeous hydrangeas.  I don't touch them at all until March (I live in the Northeast) or early April.  Then I hand prune the tops of the stems that bloomed last year, and cut off any dead canes.  I then add Epsom Salts in a ring around the plant and water it in lightly.  Come late spring, early summer, they are profuse with blooms.  I hope this helps.
